Sliding Glass Door Repair
Connecticut's most-repaired door, and rarely one that needs replacing
If the door takes two hands and a shoulder, the rollers underneath have collapsed. We replace them, deal with the rail they damaged on the way out, and reset the panel square — on site, usually in a single visit.
Nothing about the door itself has broken
A sliding glass panel weighs a great deal, and its whole weight rides on four small wheels. When those wheels flatten, seize or corrode, the panel stops rolling and starts dragging along the rail. It feels heavy, it sounds wrong, and each month it cuts a deeper groove into the metal beneath it.
Rollers are consumable. They are meant to be replaced. What goes wrong is that homeowners get quoted a complete patio door replacement for a part worth a tiny fraction of it.
Connecticut adds two complications. On the shoreline, salt gets into unsealed bearings and seizes them solid rather than wearing them gradually. Inland, a winter of ice and road grit in the track does the same job more slowly. Either way, the rail almost always needs attention alongside the rollers.
A sliding door should move with one finger. If yours does not, that is a repair.

Water sits in the track, freezes overnight and thaws by afternoon, over and over from December to March. That cycle distorts rails, splits seals and destroys rollers that would have lasted years in a milder climate.
Grit and sand in the track
Beach sand in summer and road treatment in winter both end up in the door track. Mixed with old lubricant it becomes a grinding paste, and it is the leading cause of early roller wear inland.

Sliding door questions
How do I know whether it is the rollers or the track?
If the door drags but the rail still looks clean and smooth, it is the rollers. If you can see or feel grooves and burrs in the metal, both need attention. We check both at the estimate.
My door is stuck shut after the winter.
Usually ice in the track plus rollers that have finally given up. Forcing it is how rails get bent, so it is worth having looked at rather than fought with.
Can the track be repaired, or do I need a new door?
Repaired, in nearly every case. A stainless cap fits over the damaged original and gives the rollers a hard, true surface. Replacing the frame is rarely necessary.
We are near the water and everything corrodes. Is there a better part?
Yes. Sealed stainless-bearing rollers and corrosion-resistant fasteners last considerably longer in shoreline conditions than the standard components most doors ship with.
How do I keep it working afterwards?
Vacuum the track a few times a year, especially at the end of winter, and use a dry silicone lubricant rather than an oil-based spray. Oil holds grit and salt.
